Don’t let the dark color of this XA fool you. It is not an oak bomb. Aromas: Intensely fruity. Cherry, honey crisp apples and citrus. A touch of sweet apple cider. Dried fruit, nuts, vanilla and almond cream marry with mellow barrel spice notes. An undercurrent of earthy minerals in the background. This has a very round and polished nose. Flavor: The mellow, elegant aromas do not prepare your palate for the first sip of this 50% ABV XA. After an initial ethanol blast, the heat turns silky. Vanilla, leather, burnt almond and toffee notes surface. Fruit and agave regain center stage. Allspice, cloves, cinnamon and a hint of anise contribute another layer of interest. It is buttery and very viscous. Salinity and a mouthwatering umami nuance tempt you to chew this. A lazy and leisurely finish. Well done.

This the new Lote 02/21 from this year. The agaves were sourced from Los Altos. And 7% extra añejo was added. Nose: The aromas begin with caramel and a slightly funky, sour note which gradually fades into the round vanilla aromas. Subtle baking spices, tame white pepper and lightly toasted nuts. Dried fruit: apricots and raisins. The caramel and vanilla morph into a butterscotch richness. With a little breathing time, thyme, tea and cut grass emerge. Flavor: An incredible oily, buttery texture coats your entire palate. There is salinity and an umami element. As a counterpoint, the tame white pepper of the nosing, takes on a near fiery presence. Assertive agave fruitiness. Spices punching through: cinnamon and cloves. Hazelnut and butterscotch rounding out the profile and bringing it all together. Cazcanes does not produce assembly line profiles - pretty unique tequilas.

Nose: Spicy entrance: cloves, cinnamon, green cardamom and cracked pepper. Green agave and sweet ripe agave aromas. Followed up with a floral/ berry note. Hints of guava and dark cherries. An earthy, mineral element in the aroma. Light citrus and baked pineapples. A touch of smokiness. Flavor: Ripe natural agave leads into spiciness and a buttery brown sugar note. The combination of jalapeño pepper, plus white and black pepper are borderline overpowering - as well as holding trace bitterness. There are vegetal and herbal undertones of artichoke and asparagus. A green banana note, a whisper of citrus. Not really oily in the mouth - yet it is appealing on the palate. A clean profile. Finishes with a suggestion of subtle vanilla. This high proof needs a lot of time to open up and show it’s pedigree.

Excellent taste and long warm finish - knocked a few points for value due to price pint. Good sipper!

Nose of vanilla, oak, citrus, cherry and oak. A touch of leather and butter. Nice round mouthfeel with a slightly dry finish to balance the agave sweetness. Very nice but a little more aged than I look for in a repo.
