A full bodied Anejo from an awesome wine and spirit maker. Sweet, vanilla, orange flavors come through

Aroma is pretty closed and needs a little time in the glass. Like the reposado, barrel dominates the aroma with just a bit of dried fruit and baking spice (nutmeg primarily). Flavor opens with fruit sweetness then explodes with heavy spice - peppermint and cinnamon. Although it has that big spice bomb, the finish is short. This one drinks a lot like whiskey. A bit of sweetness softens it a little but not enough. The añejo has none of the complexity that was in the repo. 11-10-2018

Heavy barrel notes fill the aroma. A little surprising for a repo. Cedar and pine are very noticeable with just a little caramel and vanilla. The flavor is dominated by spice and heat - both peppery and baking spices. However there is something subtle beneath the spice that tones it down a bit. I am curious about the wine barrels used for aging and whether the subtle fruit sweetness comes from those barrels. The finish is relatively short. This one seems to have a lot of potential but ultimately comes up short. 11-10-2018
