Rey Sol's flavor profile has remained consistant throughout the years. This 2016 bottle is no exception. So much goodness here. Upfront agave, dark chocolate, raspberry, berries, honey, mocha, molasses, marshmallow, nutmeg, butterscotch, leather, hint of vanilla. Worth every penny.
Lighter than I thought for an XA aged this long. Great nose, mid palate and finishes nicely. Little nuances of sweet agave. Awesome bottle with good juice
Beautiful presentation but not just a one trick pony. The nose is full of oak, burnt sugar, wet earth, tobacco, apple, and very floral. The palate throws waves of carmel, maple, and butterscotch. Some vanilla and ripe berries present themselves. Sweet but somehow not overdone. Full mouth feel and long legs coat the glass. Long sweet and spicy finish. This tequila is great for the cognac fan or even the bourbon nerd. Perfect to be sipped neat after dinner. This comes in a beautiful decanter and a long 6 years of aging but the price will turn off some folks.
Excellent cognac style tequila. Just dinging a bit for price and a little more heat than I’d expect. Similar to AsomBroso with heavy vanilla tones.
This 6 year XA will give off an amazing aroma of melted butter, roasted nuts and dark chocolate covered cherries - with plumb and apricots. The palate will greet you with barrel oak, but will maintain steamed agave. This is very hard to accomplish with a 6 year XA. Somehow they made it work. It has a sweet, brown sugar finish. Although it comes in a crystal, handmade decanter, the price is still commensurate with the juice. I found this to exceed my expectations.
10yr aniversario single barrel. Nice nose, not too much oak for a 10yr. But you get quiet enough taste of it in the front end. Balanced it by the mix pepper dark chocolate, hint of vanilla and heat towards the end.
This one if the best tequila I had si far. Great Aromas like Caramel, cinnamon, oak, just sweet as heaven. Can this be real it is made the right way. This Taste Amazin!!!!!
A favorite extra añejo of mine! A little spicy up front on the palate but softens nicely with a butterscotch finish!
Sooooo gentle considering the time in oak, it’s rare to find balance and restraint in an expensive XA. Toasted nuts and caramel linger far after your last sip, the finish is by far the star of the show.
Nice, fragrant aroma full of fruit and oak. You can literally pick up the aroma from 3 feet away. Flavor is smooth and creamy with sweet fruit and caramel upfront that evolves to a nice baking spice bite. The finish is medium to long. This is a great end of the evening sipper. The bottle is also fantastic. 03-29-2018
Aroma: Big aroma of butterscotch, vanilla and baked tropical fruit. Floral berry notes and hint of wet rocks, citrus and layered barrel spices. Flavor: Balanced and buttery toffee and hazelnut and leather notes. The baked agave is still present, with only light oak notes for an XA. Viscous with vanilla, anise and pepper undercurrents. Trace earthiness. Slow lingering finish with a little black pepper reposing on the back of my tongue.
Maybe it's the moment or it's really great juice but I'm enjoying this at El Presidio in Mazatlan Centro Histirico with my wife of two years. ????????????
This is an extra anejo that has not gone too far, which is rare. Agave is still present and the wood isn't introducing any unwanted spice. Good stuff, if you can afford it!
This is my favorite XA. Very good tequila. Loses some point due to cost. Excellent to drink after dinner in Mexico!
Good XA. To sweet for my taste. Had caramel and vanilla notes . Same on the palette , with citrus. Agave and pepper. Would prefer to water this down with some ice , due to the sweetness . But pretty good .
Best XA I have ever had.
Butterscotch
My top 3 tequilas
Aroma of spiced apple, raisins and caramel with a hint of wood. Flavour of liquorice and raisins and cinnamon alongside baked apple and a hint of agave. This is one of the smoothest tequilas I have tried, the taste is not quite as strong expected when you first smell this tequila, however the taste does linger and the mouthfeel is superb. It isn’t my favorite tequila, however it is up there. I purchased this around the £120 mark which makes it well worth it, I have another bottle on the way.
Easy sipping. Quite a punch of Vanilla and caramel on the front but with good spice on the finish. Agave notes are noticeable, but I’d like them to be a little more pronounced. Still a nice sipper in a great bottle. My understanding is that this is unusual.
sweet nose, vanilla agave. Very dark in color which tells of the age but it doesn’t smell overly woody. You definitely taste the oak though. The sweetness hits you up front but quickly fades to the oaky pepper taste you are left with. Some caramel and a bit of heat throughout that lingers a bit but nothing overwhelming.
Rey Sol, Extra Añejo - this bottle was gifted to me by a very good friend (thanks Roger), and i had every intention of saving it for a special occasion... I decided the "act" of just opening the bottle was "special" enough, hahaha. Sweet butterscotch, woodsy spiced oak aromas. and flavors of spiced-honey, caramel, butterscotch, vanilla... with a delicate finish.
Fantastic on the nose with strong scent of dried fruit, particularly dried fig. Hint of wood on the nose as well as vanilla. Wood much more present in the mouth feel and leaves a bit to be desired given how spectacular the nose is but excellent nonetheless. Smooth lasting finish. Great option for special occasions.
One of the cool things about La Cata is that they make things available to tequila geeks like you and me. Their first exclusive offering is the special edition “La Cata” single barrel extra añejo from Rey Sol.

Purchased for USD187.50 in November 2021. Rating the value a 7 due to the price I paid, it would be 1 to 2 points lower had I paid retail (USD250). Nose: Sweet, sugary caramel, butterscotch, vanilla, and other oak characteristics. The blend of American and French oak works very nicely. Palate: Creamy, rich agave, enveloped by the oak nuances. Finish: Slight alcohol burn that is faintly peppery. Some oak characteristics linger. Presentation: Beautiful decanter that also comes with a crystal/glass topper (which I'll never use). The box design is great. This is one of the few tequilas with a "pretty bottle" that is actually very good.
