Great agave aroma. Very spicy in the mouth with a lot of pepper. The finish has a sweetness and a smoothness that I really like.

For only spending 1 year and 1 month in oak, this tequila has taken quite a lot away from the barrel...WOW-- it really got a quality cask! The distiller's tasting notes are spot on IMHO, and I was a little worried about the "acetone" note, but it somehow turned out to be a good thing. The creme brulee note hit strongly on the nose and palate; yet it felt entirely organic-- not at all artificial. The finish is very long, semi-drying, and fairly heavy on the high quality oak imparts (chocolate, vanilla, ect...), there's also some cinnamon! At $67.50 per 750ml, I will DEFINITELY get more when available (I got the ONLY bottle available for the next two weeks in Central Oregon)...feeling privileged!

As pale an añejo as I have seen from Ocho and La Alteña, some rested blancos have more color. The flavor however refutes the fact that color alone is any indicator of flavor. A mellowing of the more aggressive components of the blanco has taken place along with the addition of some subtle barrel elements from the one plus year aging. This has subtle caramel and spice along with a bunch of roasted agave. Finish is long with some numbing from alcohol. Interesting to me is the fact the 2014 La Magueyera Rancho is the only one to have produced blanco, reposado, añejo, single barrel añejo and extra añejo expressions making it unique to date. edit to add 2015 La Latilla as the next Rancho to produce all iterations. 31/05/2018

Aroma: delicate nose, agave comes through a prominent layer of grassiness/earthiness and through mild hints of vanilla and oak. Taste: follows the nose, a robust agave, grass, and earth mixture are at the forefront with intermingled soft notes of vanilla and very mild oak. Finish is on the longer side (mild heat, with balanced sweetness, earthiness, agave, and very mild oak). Overall, this tequila is superbly balanced, with a focus on the terroir of the agave (which is very apparent in the taste) and the oak playing a very subdued role (in a good way in my opinion, as I prefer less oak forward tequilas). This particular year of Tequila Ocho añejo (2014) is one of my favorites so far.

So light in color it could easily be mistaken for a reposado. Smooth, lightly sweet, and leaves you wanting more. Maybe that's why they call it tequila ocho! One just isn't enough.

My favorite anejos, not overly rested or oaked, maintaining the agave forward character and caramel tones of a reposado.

Tasty caramel flavors and thick mouthfeel.

This rating more applies to the 2014 anejo but there is no listing for that specific expression.

2014 actually!.... excellent lightly aged anejo, more like a reposado but with lots going on!...
